Rejoice it's Taco Tuesday! But wait, you are really focusing on real foods that are healthy for the family and you know deep down those nasty taco packets from the store can't be great for you.
A) You are correct, those packets are full of many not so good for you ingredients B) You have come to the right place.
I have for you today a healthy, homemade taco seasoning blend that will suit your picky children and you. This blend is mild but packed full of flavor, and has zero ingredients that aren't awesome for you and your family. Yay, yay, yay! I love a meal that I can make compliant for me and the right flavors so my kids won't complain.
My two older kids, in case you haven't read my other posts, are so freaking picky. My daughter is just now getting better about eating things but my middle son is ridiculous. Oh the dinner horrer stories I could tell.
So when I say something is kid friendly, I do honestly mean it. It also means if your looking for a taco seasoning that is knock your socks off spicy, this isn't your blend. My kids will literally say anything is spicy. It may be the only way they know how to describe food, besides gagging. What ?? Your kids don't gag at the dinner table too when they hate something? Lucky you.
I have been making paleo taco seasoning a very long time (years, actually) and this blend we love. Most homemade taco seasonings contain a lot of the same ingredients give or take a few ingredients. The amounts are what vary.
Why "taco packets" aren't healthy
If you are new to label reading you maybe wondering why store bought taco packets are bad for you.
To help you understand more about what your eating here's a list of some of the problematic ingredients in three of the most popular taco packets on the market.
- Modified cornstarch
- Natural flavors
- Sodium dioxide
- Yellow cornflour
- Vegetable oil including high oleic soybean oil
- Spice (this could include unnatural ingredients)
Here are the top three reasons the above ingredients are not good for our bodies.
- Corn and soy have very high amounts of pesticides and are gmo if you are looking at a product that isn't organic.
- They aren't "natural". The term natural ingredients isn't necessarily a good term. If you see this on a label you need to do more digging. The FDA doesn't specify what natural has to mean and can include any type of food, real or fake.
- Some are completely unnecessary ingredients. Making your own taco seasoning eliminates unnecessary ingredients such as sugar or anti caking agents.
In short, non organic store bought taco packets although small, have a big impact on your health. They have high inflammatory foods and ingredients that can interfere with our hormones. Which means very unscientifically, they can make you feel like dog crap.
Ingredients for homemade paleo taco seasoning

How to make
It is really simple to make your own seasonings. Just measure each spice out into the jar you are storing it in. Once they are all added stir to mix well. Or just put the lid on the jar and give it a good shake.
How to use paleo taco seasoning
This recipe makes 1 servings of taco seasoning which goes into 1 pound of meat. I prefer to just make my seasoning as I cook the meat, but if you want to make more at one time just double or triple your ingredients. Then you just need to add 2 tablespoons of seasoning to one pound of meat.
To make ground beef taco meat with this seasoning, you start with browning your beef. Brown the beef in a skillet and cook until done (no pink). Add your taco seasoning and ⅓ cup of water to the ground beef. Let this simmer for 5 minutes stirring occasionally. You can add up to ½ cup of water to the ground beef if you like the taco meat less thick.
How to store
This will store for a really freaking long time. But if you have taco night once a week like we do it won't last long enough for you to test that theory. This will last to the expiration dates found on the spices you used. Usually a few years. Just store it in an airtight container. To reduce waste I like to reuse old spice jars from spices we already used.
