    Blue matcha...who knew right?

Well technically blue matcha is butterfly pea powder. So this is essentially a butterfly pea latte, but either way this drink is out of this world beautiful and tasty.

If you are new to butterfly pea flower powder you may be wondering what it is, why you should drink it and what the heck it even tastes like. No worries friends, we are diving into all of those juicy details below.

What is butterfly pea flower powder

The butterfly pea flower grows in Thailand and Myanmar. These flowers only bloom for one day and is actually considered an herb.

The powder is from harvested blooms that are dried and then ground into a powder. You can also make tea from the dried blooms without grounding into a powder.

    Health benefits

These beautiful blue flowers pack a hefty punch when it comes to health benefits.

The flower's scientific name is the Clitorea ternatea Flower, which in fact sounds grosser than the word pea. However! Clitorea ternatea Flowers contain high doses of anthocyanin when extracted properly.

Anthocyanin is also found in blueberries and is responsible for being an antioxidants that fights free radicals in the body.

Butterfly pea flower has been used in ayurvedic traditions for roles as a memory enhancer, nootropic, anti-stress, anxiolytic, antidepressant, anticonvulsant, tranquilizing and sedative agent.

    What does it taste like

Despite the name, it doesn't taste like peas.

It is a very mild taste. So mild in fact, you probably won't even taste it in your latte.

    Ingredients and substitutions

To make this matcha latte you will need the following ingredients:

    • butterfly pea flower powder- this is super easy to find online
    • milk (dairy or non dairy)- I really liked this with cashew milk
    • vanilla extract
    • honey

    Substitutions

Milk- you can use any milk that you would like for this recipe. Just keep in mind that if you choose one with a strong flavor it may affect the overall taste of the recipe.

Honey- Feel free to swap the honey out for any sweetener of choice.

    Expert tips

If you happen to have a bamboo whisk it is the perfect tool to mix your blue buttefly pea flower powder with the water in step one of the recipe card. Be sure to whisk until smooth and no clumps.

I like to use my milk frother that is attached to my Keurig, but be sure to check out the instructions for stove top and using a milk frother for what works best for your needs.

    Description

A beautiful blue matcha latte for relaxing and soaking up tons of antioxidants. Fight stress and enjoy the beauty of natural butterfly pea flower powder.

    Ingredients

    Scale
    • 1 teaspoon of blue butterfly pea flower powder
    • 2  tablespoons of hot water
    • ⅔ cup of milk (dairy or non dairy)
    • 1 teaspoon of honey
    • ¼ teaspoon of vanilla extract

    Instructions

    Stove Top

    1. In a wide mouth mug, whisk the butterfly pea flower powder with the hot water until you have a smooth consistency with no lumps. (see notes)
    2. In a small saucepan gently heat your milk, honey and vanilla to a simmer. Stir  continuously so the milk does not scorch onto the bottom of the pan. Once heated whisk really well to froth and then pour into mug with the butterfly pea powder. If you would like it extra foamy you can add to a blender and blend on high for a few seconds.
    3. Enjoy warm anytime you need to relax.

    Milk Frother

    1. In a wide mouth mug, whisk the butterfly pea flower powder with the hot water until you have a smooth consistency with no lumps. (see notes)
    2. In a milk frother add your milk, honey and vanilla and froth per instructions. Pour the heated frothed milk into the mug with the butterfly pea flower powder. (see notes)
    3. Enjoy warm anytime you need to relax.

    Notes

    • If you have a bamboo matcha whisk, it will work really well for step number 1.
    • If your frother does not heat the milk be sure to heat the milk and other ingredients by following the stove top ingredients and then froth.
