Why natural is better
Did you know the skin is the largest organ of the body? Of the 5 million pores on your body, your face contains 20,000 of them. What you put on your skin is absorbed into your body system through the 5 million pores located all over your body.
Here is a better way to think about what goes on your skin and if it is harmful. Petroleum, a common ingredient found in face products is a byproduct of gasoline distillation. Would you eat petroleum or gasoline? Absolutely not.
We all know that would be very toxic. Yet so many of us are still using this and products just as toxic as petroleum on our skin. These ingredients are still absorbing, and still affecting our health.
Harmful ingredients found in face wash
We already discussed petroleum but let’s talk about a few more toxic ingredients found in face care products. Remember this list is limited and there are many more harmful ingredients out there. To find out more check out these two sites ( Non Toxic Revolution and Think Dirty App)
- Phthalates- stabilize the “parfum” or “fragrance” found in most of your face products. Phthalates have been labeled as “possible carcinogens” by the US Department of Health
- Parabens- also derived from petroleum, are known endocrine disruptors. This means it messes with the hormones found in our bodies by mimicking them. This is very bad news for males and females.
- Triclosan- Triclosan can alter horomone regulation, cause resistance to anti biotics and be harmful to our immune systems. This is found in products that promote anti bacterial properties.
How to switch to natural products stress free
The easiest way to pick where to start switching over is with products you use the most of. What do you at least twice in a day?
For most of us that is brushing our teeth, deodorant, and washing our face. For me the easiest to switch over has been my toothpaste and face wash.
So instead of toxins in your face wash you get healthy, holistic healing ingredients every single time we wash our face.
Ingredients
You only need the following ingredients to make this diy face scrub at home:
- Avocado oil,
- Pink Himalayan salt
- Brown sugar
- Essential oils (optional)
Benefits of this Scrub
Avocado Oil:
Avocado oil has the ability to moisturize the skin and protect it from harmful UV rays due to its vitamin and fatty acid rich properties.
Avocados are high in monounsaturated fats, antioxidants, minerals and vitamin A, B and E. These nutrient rich properties help skin cells revive, improving the overall appearance of your skin. Hence the glow you will get from using this scrub.
Avocados are high in Palmitoleic acid which is an omega-7 monounsaturated fatty acid. Palmitoleic acid has been found to have many skin promoting properties such as delaying the appearance of premature aging, moisturize while tightening the skin, enhance skin elasticity and brighten complexions.
Brown Sugar
Brown sugar works as a natural exfoliant and removes dead, dull skin cells. Removing htis layer of dead stuff will improve the overall appearance and texture of your skin.
Brown sugar exfoliates in two ways:
- The rough texture exfoliates.
- Brown sugar also contains glycolic acid which is an alpha hydroxy acid and is amazing for your skin that exfoliates.
When your skin has all of the dead skin cells removed it has the ability to retain moisture better, resulting in moisturized skin that lasts. Brown sugar also has antibacterial properties.
Himalayan Sea Salt
Himalayan sea salt is great to eat, but also has benefits for your skin. In addition to being a great exfoliator, Himalayan salt has a huge mineral profile and contains over 80 minerals and electrolytes that help lock in moisture when used topically.
Himalayan sea salt can also prevent breakouts by balancing out the PH of the skin.
Essential Oils
I like to use one of two oils for this face scrub. If acne is an issue for you I recommend lemongrass.
Lemongrass can minimize the pore size and sebum production, reducing blemishes. Lemongrass essential oil is vitamin and mineral rich. It contains A, B and C vitamins as well as essential minerals such as magnesium and manganese. These vitamins and minerals support beautiful skin and decrease inflammation.
For supporting aging skin I like to use frankincense. Frankincense is amazing for reducing fine lines, strengthening and improving tone and elasticity of skin as well as fighting breakouts.
Will oil make my face breakout?
The answer is no. In fact, oil washing can be dated really far back in time.
Avocado oil in particular has stearic acid (another fatty acid) and stearic acid can cleanse dirt, sweat and sebum from the skin.
In my experience, the only time it may occasionally break me out is if I have gone a while without using this scrub and then start again. I attribute this to my skin adjusting to being exfoliated and it subsides after a few washes .
Most face washes tend to dry the skin out, which can actually make breakouts worse. Using oil will moisturize while cleansing. Not stripping your skin of important oils but only removing the dirt that needs to go.
